Organising your Voice Modules
=============================
One of the most frustrating things about using Rhapsody is when you play
a score and it tells you that "Some staves do not have voices
installed..." The reason is that, although Rhapsody knows the name of
the voice (or at least the last 9 characters), it does not know where to
find the voice (ie it does not know the filename). In short, Rhapsody
expects the correct voices to be loaded before it starts to play. The
trouble is, YOU may not know where to find the voice either! The best
thing therefore is to keep all your voice modules in one place. An
application directory called !Voices containing a large selection of
voice modules, all created with the VoxBox suite of programs is supplied
on the VOICES disc. If you have a hard disc, it would be a good idea to
copy this directory into the root directory of your hard disc, rather
like your !Fonts directory.
Now it is obviously inconvenient to have to click on a whole lot of new
voice modules whenever you want to play a new score. In order to help
you organise your voices into special sets, you may use the application
!VoiceApp. What this does is to enable to to create a little
application, with its own special sprite file, which will load just the
voices you want for a particular purpose.
To create a voice application, double-click on the !VoiceApp icon. its
icon will appear on the icon bar. Open the main window by clicking on
this icon. One by one, drag all the voice modules which you wish to
install onto the window. If you decide that you don't want one of them
after all, drag it off again. It does not matter what order they are in,
nor does it matter if there are any spaces left.
When you have done that, enter a name in the writable icon at the bottom
and drag the file icon to a suitable filer window. !VoiceApp will then
create a voice application with a default sprite file showing a
synthesiser. If you want to change the sprite, use !Paint to edit the
!Sprites file inside the application.
Note that VoiceApp applications automatically delete all the previously
installed voices (except the default voices).
Provided that all the voice modules you use are in the !Voices
directory, the application you have created should work happily wherever
it is and wherever the !Voices directory is moved (provided, of course,
that the computer has 'seen' the !Voices directory and therefore knows
where it is).
Problem: Occasionally RISC OS does not seem to load voices correctly and
deletes a previously loaded voice with a new one. This seems to be
particularly true of VoxSynth voices which are often deleted by later
additions. If this happens, try putting the VoxSynth files at the end of
the list of voices to load.
